Below are some interesting facts about some of the cover crops available.
‘Green Manure’ is specific to crops grown for plowing under (or ’till in’, or ’till under”). Green manure crops are typically annuals, such as the Soil Builder Mixes, Vetches, and Bell Beans. Most seed that is classified as Green Manure adds significant amounts of nitrogen and organic matter to the soil.
‘Annual Cover Crops’ Choke out weeds and provide nectar for beneficial insects. If desired, plant them with grains (oats, barley, or rye) which support upright vining growth and act as a nurse crop. In most areas, vetches need to establish early and should be seeded at the beginning of fall.
‘PERENNIAL COVER CROPS’
These irrigated varieties will remain green and lush year round, providing excellent habitat for beneficial insects. Well-suited for permanent covers in orchards, vineyards, and bush berries. Once established, they require only occasional mowing or grazing to keep down weed competition.
‘Erosion Control’
Don’t allow your precious topsoil to wash away in Winter runoff! Soil conservation should be a top priority for all landowners. High rainfall and bare soil will lead to severe erosion, washing away your land’s most precious resource—its topsoil. All of these mixes will re-seed at the end of their growing cycle to maintain the cover for future years. Though not required, initial irrigations will hasten establishment. On steep slopes, the use of a thin straw mulch will also help the seeds get started. Many people use jute netting or burlap to stabilize the soil after the seed is planted.

With all the glorious rain and snow we have received this winter, fire abatement has been one of the last things on our minds! However, while those April showers may bring May flowers, they also bring up tons of brush, grass and foliage which will soon turn dry, brown and flammable! Big spring rains can bring big summer fires. Get a jump on fire season this year, and start thinking about defensible space and fire hazards around your home and out-buildings before disaster strikes!

Lobesia botrana will either go down in Mendocino county history as the only moth who’s scientific name was easier to say than its common name, or it will not go down in history at all. The European Grapevine Moth (EGVM) will be here to stay.
Right now, we need the help of every gardener, farmer, rancher and grower in Mendocino County. Together we can stop this pest, or at least diminish its future impact. One Napa vineyard experienced a 100% crop loss due to the moth last year. We can stop that from happening here.
What you can do:
1. If you grow grapes within the greater Ukiah area, request a trap from the Agricultural Department. Early detection is the best form of control.
2. If you know the location of wild grapes or abandoned vineyards in or near the quarantine area, please report them so they can be trimmed back.
3. Remove old and neglected grapevines from your property, or at the very least prune them back and start taking care of them.
4. Learn to recognize the moth.
Please, everyone, lets tackle this thing. If you have questions regarding this pest, feel free to stop by the Farm Supply and talk to us.
The MCFS Garden Planner was put together using the statistical last frost dates for Ukiah, and utilizing transplant times from the California Master Gardener Handbook and the Sunset Western Garden Book, it’s an easy way to make sure spring doesn’t get sprung on you with nothing ready to transplant!
