"On April 7, 1949 the Farm Supply was incorporated in Ukiah based on the original marketing program through the Farm Bureau Nursery. The first Farm Supply building was located at the north end of town on State Street, currently where the interstate 101 interchange is located. When the freeway was put through in the early 1960s the Farm Supply moved to another building on State Street, the current location of Wyatt Irrigation Supply. This location was subject to a number of flood events from Ackerman Creek and since the business was outgrowing the building, a new location was sought after. When the Ukiah Fruit Growers dissolved their contract with the state in March of 1978 and disbanded the corporation, the packing house property on Talmage Road was put up for sale. The Farm Bureau, with the coaxing of Leon Hooper and Jerry Fetzer, purchased the packing house property in 1978 in order to provide a new location for both the Farm Supply as well as a new complex to house the Farm Bureau office. The rail siding and the drive on scales at the Talmage property were key selling points at the time. Both the Farm Supply and the Farm Bureau remain there today!

Our Agricultural Roots

When the Farm Supply opened in 1949 it was one of three major agricultural supply businesses in Ukiah. The Farmers Club was located on Perkins Street where the current Walgreens building is today until it was destroyed by fire. The Holz Company operated by Carl Holzhauser dominated the market until the time of Carl’s death in 1957. Carl also owned and operated the flour mill on the corner of State and Gobbi streets. After 1957, the Farm Supply took over the business from the Holz Company and filled the demand for farming and ranching materials.

The Mendocino County Farm Supply is one of only a few County Farm Supply Companies in California still providing competitive prices and paying patronage dividends annually. The Farm Supply was started as a cooperative enterprise with capital interest bearing stock and profits being returned to customers based on their annual dollar purchases. The same practice of returning annual dividends is still in place today. In order to qualify for the annual dividend return, Farm Supply customers must be current members of the Farm Bureau.
